About this event

The Scholastic Surf Series Orange County High School division returns to Bolsa Chica State Beach at Lifeguard Tower 25 on Saturday, January 9, 2027. This is the fourth stop on the official five-contest 2026–27 Orange County High School schedule. Participating school teams contest Boys’ Shortboard, Boys’ Longboard, Girls’ Shortboard, Girls’ Longboard and coed Bodyboard divisions, with team-versus-team heats first and individual competition immediately afterward. The official packet lists 14 competition spots per Orange County high-school team: six Boys’ Shortboard, three Boys’ Longboard, two Girls’ Shortboard, two Girls’ Longboard and one Bodyboard spot. Athletes must be full-time students in grades 9–12 at the represented school, maintain at least a 2.0 GPA and receive coach approval; charter, program and no-home-team placements require district-policy compliance and SSS approval through the coach. Registration is currently active through the SSS student portal. The 2026–27 packet lists an $85 student membership plus a $2,600 Orange County High School team fee, while each school decides what it charges individual surfers. Card and service fees may apply. Team forms and fees are due September 21, 2026, and a coach may impose an earlier cutoff; walk-up contest entry is not announced. The current schedule does not publish a January 9 start time, heat draw, team roster, check-in point or spectator zone, so the event is represented as all-day with time TBA. Standard SSS heats run 15 minutes, allow up to eight waves and count the best two scores. Individual finalists receive medals at each contest, and season rankings feed the separate, invitation-only state championships. Competitors must use a division-compliant board and wear the official contest jersey in the competition area. No board caddying or water assist is allowed. Spectators may watch from the public beach without an announced event ticket, but must stay clear of the competition zone and follow beach marshal, lifeguard and park directions. California State Parks lists Bolsa Chica daily hours of 6:00 AM–10:00 PM with the entry gate closing at 9:00 PM, cashless day-use parking and paved accessible routes, parking and restrooms; event-specific parking, sand access, beach-wheelchair staging and accommodations at Tower 25 are not published. The regular season is weather permitting, and no January 9 swell threshold, weather-call time or backup date is posted. Recheck the official schedule, roster page and coach instructions before travel.
