Stop #1 of the 2026–27 Salt Life WSA Championship Tour presented by Got Milk? was the season opener of the Western Surfing Association’s amateur championship series, held August 29–30, 2026, at San Onofre State Beach — Trail 6, the southernmost of the San Onofre Bluffs "Trails" surf breaks along old Highway 101 south of San Clemente. Trail 6 is a classic, forgiving Southern California point/beach break in the same San Onofre–Trestles stretch of coast that hosts the WSL Championship Tour, and it sits on the Orange/San Diego county line roughly 60 miles south of downtown Los Angeles, making it an LA-regional venue on a tour whose other stops run at Ocean Beach, Huntington Beach, Oceanside, San Clemente’s T-Street, and Dana Point. This was a regular-season, open-entry contest: any surfer holding current WSA membership who paid the event entry, signed the liability waiver, and entered a listed division could compete — it was not invitation-only. The event ran WSA’s full age-bracketed ladder in shortboard (from Mini Groms 6 & under and Micro Grom push-in classes up through Boys’/Girls’ U10–U18, Men’s 18–29, Masters 30–39, Seniors 40–49, Legends 50+, and Open Men’s and Open Women’s), a longboard program (U14 and U18 through Open and Senior Men’s 40+), and a full para-surfing and waveski program (PS1–PS3, PS Prone 1–2, PS VI1–VI2, PSK and Para Waveski). Surfers were seeded from prior-season points (surfers moving up divisions carried 80% of their points; new entrants seeded alphabetically at the bottom), and first-round heat draws and the full heat schedule were published as a downloadable document before the contest. The head judge’s notes for the weekend called for fair-to-good, fairly light-wind conditions and high-performance surfing, with judging focused on rewarding quality maneuver combinations and single major, powerful and progressive maneuvers performed in the most critical sections, plus clean, controlled execution with speed, power and flow (with a traditional nose-riding, style-and-grace emphasis for longboard). Watching was free from the public state beach; state-beach day-use parking was $20 per day (waived with a California State Parks pass), and it is a long, slow drive and walk down the bluff trail to the sand. Per-division outcomes from this opener feed the official WSA 2026–27 season ratings (best six regular-season scores plus West Coast Championship points), which decide season standings and USA Surfing Championships / USA Surfing Prime qualification pathways.
