California State Games Surfing 2026

About this event

The 2026 California State Games Surfing competition was held Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Ocean Beach Pier in San Diego, California — the opening sport of the annual California State Games, an Olympic-style amateur multi-sport festival (presented by National University) featuring 19 sports across the state. The surfing contest is a youth event open to all athletes, run under the WSL and WSA rule book across shortboard and longboard divisions by age (8 & under with push-in allowed, 9–12, 13–15, and 16–18) and gender, with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals awarded to the top three in each event. The 2026 edition ran in fun 2–3 ft south-swell surf on a breezy, warm summer day, with 12 divisions ultimately contested at the OB Pier. Athletes who marched in the California State Games Opening Ceremonies also took part in the broader Games experience. Ocean Beach is a classic San Diego surf community with free public parking (OB Pier lot, OB Main Lifeguard Station lot, Ocean Beach lot, and metered street parking). While San Diego sits at the southern edge of TrickBook’s greater Los Angeles region (roughly 120 miles from central LA), the California State Games is a major statewide competition that draws Southern California surf families from across the LA/Orange County/San Diego corridor — the same regional justification applied to the sibling California State Games Skateboarding and BMX Racing records already in TrickBook.
